Every research term you’ll meet on these pages, in plain language — plus the part
that usually goes missing: why it matters to your decision.
- Randomized controlled trial
- Researchers split people into groups by chance — like a coin flip — then give one group the treatment and the other something else. The coin flip is the point: it means the two groups are otherwise similar, so if one does better, the treatment is the likeliest reason.
- Why it matters to youThis is the strongest single kind of evidence for 'does this actually work.' When we say Proven, this is usually what's underneath it.
- Placebo, and placebo-controlled
- A placebo is a dummy — a sugar pill, or a numbing injection with nothing active in it. A placebo-controlled study compares the real thing against the dummy.
- Why it matters to youHere's the part that surprises people: placebos genuinely work. Expectation, ritual and being cared for produce real, measurable relief. So 'better than nothing' is a low bar. 'Better than a convincing placebo' is the bar that matters, and it's the one we look for.
- Sham procedure
- The placebo version of an operation or injection — everything happens the same way, except the active part.
- Why it matters to youProcedures carry an especially strong expectation effect, so sham-controlled studies are the honest test. When a treatment on our site beat a sham, that's worth knowing. When it only beat 'usual care,' we say so.
- Systematic review and meta-analysis
- Instead of one study, researchers gather every study ever done on a question, judge their quality, and pool the results into one bigger answer.
- Why it matters to youGenerally more trustworthy than any single study — but only as good as the studies inside it. A pooled answer built from weak trials is still a weak answer, which is why we sometimes label something Debated even though a meta-analysis exists.
- Statistically significant vs actually meaningful
- 'Statistically significant' only means the result probably isn't random chance. It says nothing about whether the difference is big enough to notice in your life.
- Why it matters to youThis is the single most misused idea in health marketing. A supplement can produce a statistically significant improvement that no human being would feel. When we can, we tell you whether the change was big enough to matter — not just whether it cleared the statistics bar.
- Minimum clinically important difference
- The smallest change that a patient would actually notice and care about. Researchers work it out by asking people.
- Why it matters to youIt's the honesty check on the point above. On our protein page we say plainly that the muscle gains in older adults were real but did NOT reach this threshold — because you deserve that, not a headline.
- Low certainty / high certainty evidence
- Researchers grade their own confidence. Low certainty means: this is our best current estimate, and a future study could easily overturn it.
- Why it matters to youWhen you see Debated on our site, low certainty is usually why. It's not a knock on the treatment — it's an accurate description of how much we know.
- Observational study vs trial
- An observational study watches what people already do. A trial assigns them. Watching shows you what goes together; assigning shows you what causes what.
- Why it matters to youPeople who take vitamins are also more likely to exercise and see doctors. Observational studies can't fully separate those, which is why a supplement can look wonderful in observation and do nothing in a trial. That has happened repeatedly.
- Responder rate
- The share of people who improved by a set amount — often 'at least 50% less pain' — rather than the average change across everybody.
- Why it matters to youOften more useful than an average, because averages hide the split. If a third of people improve a lot and the rest not at all, the average looks mediocre and tells you nothing about which group you'd be in. That's exactly why we test before we commit to some treatments.
- Effect size
- How big the difference was, expressed so different studies can be compared.
- Why it matters to youIt's the difference between 'this works' and 'this works a bit.' Both are honest sentences; only one of them is usually printed on a label.
- Number needed to treat
- How many people have to take a treatment for one of them to benefit.
- Why it matters to youA genuinely clarifying number. If it takes 20 people to help 1, the treatment can still be worth taking — but you should know those odds before you buy, not after.
- Which FORM was studied
- Supplements come in different chemical forms, and researchers usually tested one specific form.
- Why it matters to youThis may be the most practical thing on this page. Magnesium oxide is absorbed poorly compared with citrate; creatine monohydrate is what nearly every study used, and it's also the cheapest. Buying the wrong form is the most common way people conclude that something 'didn't work' for them.
