How to read the label and the price together

The evidence label tells you how much we know. The price tells you what a wrong guess costs you. Together they're the actual decision: a Theory-tier supplement that's cheap and safe is a fair experiment, and the same label at a premium price usually isn't. We put both on the page so you can make that call yourself.

Protein powder — whey preferred

Real but modest — it amplifies training, it doesn't replace it.

Take it if
You're training, over 60, eating less than you used to, or losing weight fast.
Skip it if
You already hit your protein target from food.

It only worked in trials that ran 24 weeks or longer. Two weeks tells you nothing.

Form that was studiedWHEY outperformed other protein types head-to-head in a network meta-analysis. Plant blends are a reasonable substitute if dairy is a problem — pair pea with rice to cover the amino acid profile.

The honest readReal but modest. In sarcopenia the gains in grip strength and muscle mass were statistically significant yet SMALL — one meta-analysis noted the difference did not exceed the minimum considered clinically meaningful. Protein is an amplifier of resistance training, NOT a substitute for it: the same reviews find nutrition plus exercise beats either alone.

Who should skip thisSkip it if you are already hitting your protein target from food — there is no bonus for exceeding it. And note the honest negative: in PRE-FRAIL AND FRAIL elderly, a controlled trial found neither whey, nor soy, nor leucine, nor creatine improved training adaptations. Frailty is not the same population as sarcopenia.

Creatine monohydrate

The best-evidenced supplement on this shelf, and one of the cheapest.

Take it if
You lift, you're over 50, or you're losing weight on a GLP-1.
Skip it if
You have significant kidney disease — it muddies lab monitoring.
Don’t get this wrong
Buy monohydrate. Skip loading. The premium forms cost more and add nothing. And no, it doesn't cause hair loss — that was tested directly.

Form that was studiedMONOHYDRATE. It is the form studied in essentially all of the literature, and it is the cheapest — the exotic forms carry a price premium and no advantage.

Dose as studied3-5 g daily (about 0.3 g/kg). NO LOADING PHASE REQUIRED — trials show taking it only on training days still works. Carbohydrate co-ingestion adds nothing.

The honest readTwo findings that surprise people. FIRST, MEMORY: a meta-analysis found creatine enhanced memory performance in healthy people, most clearly in ADULTS AGED 66-76. A 2026 trial in perimenopausal and menopausal women found improved clinical outcomes and raised brain creatine. SECOND, THE HAIR MYTH IS TESTED AND FAILED: a 12-week RCT directly examining hair-follicle health found strong evidence AGAINST the claim that creatine causes hair loss.

Who should skip thisSkip if you have significant kidney disease — not because creatine has been shown to cause harm in healthy kidneys, but because it raises creatinine on lab tests and can muddy monitoring. Tell whoever orders your bloodwork that you take it.

Useful only if you can't manage enough real protein.

You struggle to eat enough protein and whey isn't an option.

You already take whey — leucine is in it. You'd be buying it twice.

The honest readA systematic review named LEUCINE as having the best evidence for muscle mass in older people with sarcopenia, and an RCT found HMB enhanced the strength, performance and muscle-quality gains from resistance training. But whey already contains leucine — for most people a protein shake is the simpler and cheaper way to get it.

Who should skip thisSkip if you are already using whey — you are buying the same active ingredient twice. Same frailty caveat as protein.

For fixing a real deficiency — not a general health tonic.

Your blood level is low, you're over 75, or you're pregnant.
Skip it if
Your level is normal and you're taking it for pain or fractures. Neither held up in big trials.

Test, don't guess. This is one of the few worth measuring first.

The honest readTHE EVIDENCE HAS NARROWED, AND WE FOLLOW IT DOWN. The Endocrine Society's 2024 guideline suggests empiric vitamin D for defined groups — ages 1-18, ADULTS OVER 75, pregnancy, high-risk prediabetes — not for everybody. Meanwhile a 2026 BMJ meta-analysis found little to no benefit from vitamin D, calcium, or both for preventing FRACTURES AND FALLS, and VITAL found no fracture reduction in adults not selected for deficiency. Where it does earn its place: correcting a documented deficiency, and alongside whey protein in older adults, where the benefit appears to come from fixing insufficiency.

Who should skip thisSkip the reflexive high-dose habit if your level is normal. Vitamin D is not an analgesic — the VITAL pain analysis found no effect on pain prevalence or severity at consumer doses.

GLP-1 COMPANION PROTOCOL — protein + resistance training + fiber + electrolytes

If you're on a GLP-1, this isn't optional — it's how you keep muscle.

Take it if
You're on semaglutide, tirzepatide or similar.
Skip it if
Nobody, if you're on one of these drugs.

The protein is the smaller half. Resistance training is what actually preserves muscle — the powder without the lifting mostly doesn't work.

The honest readTHE FINDING THAT MATTERS AND ITS CORRECTION. Potent GLP-1 medications produce greater weight loss but a SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN LEAN MASS. The crucial 2026 nuance is that lean-mass loss is BROADLY COMPARABLE between these drugs and lifestyle-based weight loss — so it is a consequence of losing weight fast, NOT a poison in the drug. And the actionable half of the same review: MUSCLE MASS CAN BE SIGNIFICANTLY PRESERVED BY INTEGRATING RESISTANCE TRAINING. Protein and lifting are how you make sure the weight you lose is fat. Fiber and fluids address the GI side effects that are the main reason people quit.

Who should skip thisNothing here replaces the medication or the follow-up. If you are not doing the resistance training, the protein powder alone is not the protocol — it is the smaller half of it.

Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone)

Two specific jobs it does well — not a general energy supplement.

You get muscle aches on a statin, or you have migraines.
Skip it if
You're buying it for general energy or fatigue.

If statins make your muscles ache, tell us — this is a real and fixable problem that often gets blamed on something else.

The honest readWHERE IT EARNS ITS PLACE, AND IT'S RELEVANT HERE: a 2024 systematic review found CoQ10 significantly improved STATIN-INDUCED MUSCLE SYMPTOMS — with or without lowering the statin dose, and without side effects of its own. In a pain practice this matters, because statin muscle pain is common and routinely mistaken for something else. Second, MIGRAINE: a meta-analysis found reduced attack duration and frequency. Third, HEART FAILURE, which is genuinely contested — a Cochrane review found no convincing evidence while a 2024 meta-analysis reported reduced mortality and hospitalisation.

Who should skip thisSkip it as a general energy supplement — that is not what the evidence supports. If you take warfarin, tell us: CoQ10 can reduce its effect.

A very short list survives scrutiny — and you already have half of it.

You train seriously and want the few things with real evidence.

Only five supplements made the strong-evidence list: creatine, beta-alanine, nitrates, caffeine, protein. Nearly everything else in the sports aisle didn't.

The honest readA useful piece of curation: a 2024 review naming the supplements with strong evidence for performance came up with a SHORT list out of an enormous market — CREATINE, BETA-ALANINE, NITRATES, CAFFEINE and PROTEIN. Two of those you already have on this shelf. Almost everything else marketed for performance did not make the list.

Who should skip thisSkip nitrate/beetroot if you take nitrates for angina or PDE5 inhibitors — the blood-pressure effect can stack. Skip caffeine late in the day if sleep is any part of your problem, which for pain patients it usually is.

Go slowly. The bloating people blame on fiber is almost always from ramping up too fast without enough water.

Who should skip thisSkip rapid dose escalation. If you have a known stricture or motility disorder, ask first.

Hydration that actually stays in you.

You're on a GLP-1, you have POTS, or you sweat heavily.

The sodium is the active ingredient. Products that skimp on it to look 'clean' don't do the job.

The honest readTwo groups on our own list have a real reason for this. FIRST, ANYONE ON A GLP-1 MEDICATION: reduced appetite and thirst plus GI side effects make dehydration easy, and it is a common reason people feel awful on an otherwise effective drug. SECOND, PEOPLE WITH POTS or orthostatic intolerance — often alongside hypermobility — where increased salt and fluid is standard advice rather than a supplement fad.

Who should skip thisSkip if you have high blood pressure, heart failure or kidney disease and nobody has told you to increase salt — in those conditions this is exactly the wrong move. Ask first.

Daily multivitamin-multimineral

Decent evidence for memory in older adults. Not a disease preventer.

Take it if
You're older, eat unevenly, or want low-cost insurance.
Skip it if
You're expecting it to prevent cancer or heart disease — it doesn't.
Don’t get this wrong
Avoid anything containing beta-carotene: it's linked to increased lung cancer risk.

The honest readTHE CLAIM WE WILL MAKE AND THE CLAIM WE WON'T. Will: the COSMOS program — a large randomized trial with multiple substudies — found daily multivitamin use IMPROVED MEMORY in older adults and produced a more favourable two-year change in episodic memory, with meta-analysis across its substudies supporting benefit for global cognition. Won't: the USPSTF evidence report found little or no benefit for preventing cancer, cardiovascular disease or death. So this is a COGNITION-and-insurance product, not a disease-prevention product, and anyone selling it as the latter is ahead of the evidence.

Who should skip this⚠ AVOID BETA-CAROTENE-CONTAINING FORMULAS: the same USPSTF review found beta carotene associated with an INCREASED RISK OF LUNG CANCER. Skip the megadose 'high-potency' versions — more is not better here.

Omega-3 (EPA/DHA) — fish or algal oil

Good for triglycerides and inflammation markers. Not for pain.

Take it if
Your triglycerides are high, or you eat little fish.
Skip it if
You're buying it for joint or general pain — a 5-year trial in 19,000 people found nothing.
Don’t get this wrong
Algal oil is the vegan version and works the same. Prescription-grade is a different product.

The honest readFORMULATION AND POPULATION DECIDE THIS ONE. Prescription icosapent ethyl at 2 g twice daily reduced ischemic events in people with high triglycerides already on statins (REDUCE-IT) — but a different high-dose formulation tested against corn oil showed NO cardiovascular benefit (STRENGTH). Consumer fish oil reliably lowers triglycerides and improves CRP, TNF-alpha and IL-6. It does NOT reliably do much for pain: the VITAL trial found no effect on pain prevalence or severity over more than five years.

Who should skip thisSkip if you are taking it FOR PAIN — that is the one thing a large long trial specifically ruled out at consumer doses. Discuss timing before procedures.

Magnesium — glycinate or citrate

Genuinely useful — but probably not for the reason you're buying it.

Take it if
Stress, fibromyalgia, constipation, or a low intake.
Skip it if
You're buying it for muscle cramps. Cochrane looked; it doesn't work for that.
Don’t get this wrong
Never buy the OXIDE. It's the cheap drugstore default and it's poorly absorbed — it's why people think magnesium did nothing. Glycinate or citrate.

WHERE THE EVIDENCE IS WEAK: sleep — a systematic review concluded the literature is SUBSTANDARD for making firm recommendations. WHERE IT LIKELY DOESN'T WORK AT ALL: a Cochrane review found magnesium unlikely to help muscle cramps, which is probably the single most common reason people buy it.

Who should skip thisSkip magnesium OXIDE specifically. And skip it for cramps — Cochrane looked and did not find it.

🎓Proven Cheap

Iron — ferrous bisglycinate

Powerful when you need it, genuinely harmful when you don't.

Take it if
You have a documented low ferritin.
Skip it if
You haven't been tested. Most men and postmenopausal women don't need it.
Don’t get this wrong
Ferrous bisglycinate causes fewer stomach problems than the old kinds — which matters, because side effects are why most people quit iron. Alternate-day dosing is often absorbed better than daily.

Form that was studiedFERROUS BISGLYCINATE. It raised haemoglobin at least as well as older salts while causing FEWER GI side effects — which matters because nausea and constipation are why most people stop taking iron.

The honest readThis is a TEST-FIRST supplement, not a guess-first one. In iron-deficient female athletes, about 100 mg elemental iron daily or alternate-daily improved endurance performance. Ferritin is the number to ask for.

Who should skip this⚠ DO NOT take iron without a documented deficiency. Iron overload is genuinely harmful, men and postmenopausal women rarely need it, and hereditary haemochromatosis is far more common than people realise. Test, then treat.

Collagen peptides + vitamin C

Reasonable — but only as a partner to loading exercise.

Take it if
You're doing tendon or strength work and want to support it.
Skip it if
You're not exercising. Then it's just expensive protein.

Take it WITH vitamin C, about an hour BEFORE you train. The timing is the whole rationale.

Vitamin B12

A common deficiency with real consequences. Test and target.

Take it if
You're vegan, over 65, on metformin, or on long-term acid-reducing medication.
Skip it if
Your level is fine — megadosing indefinitely isn't harmless.
Don’t get this wrong
Untreated, this causes nerve damage that can become permanent. And a persistently HIGH B12 isn't a win — it's a reason to investigate.

The honest readTHIS IS A TEST-AND-TARGET SUPPLEMENT, NOT A GUESS ONE. Deficiency is common in older adults, in vegans and vegetarians, and — the group people forget — in anyone on METFORMIN or a long-term ACID-REDUCING MEDICATION (a PPI), both of which impair absorption. Untreated, it causes nerve damage that can become permanent, which is why we would rather check than assume.

Who should skip this⚠ MORE IS NOT BETTER, AND THIS ONE SURPRISES PEOPLE: persistently elevated B12 above 1,000 pg/mL on two measurements has been associated with solid tumours, blood cancers and increased cardiovascular death. A high B12 is a reason to investigate, not a sign you are winning. Don't megadose it indefinitely without a reason.

Zinc

Fine for deficiency; the cold claims are shakier than the marketing.

Take it if
Low intake, poor wound healing, or a short course for a cold.
Skip it if
You want to take a high dose long-term without a reason.
Don’t get this wrong
Zinc blocks absorption of some antibiotics (cipro, doxycycline) and risedronate — separate them by hours. Long-term high doses cause copper deficiency.

The honest readThe common-cold evidence is where most people meet zinc, and it is messier than the marketing: a 2024 review found substantial variation in what was given and how outcomes were measured, plus incomplete reporting, which should temper confident claims about shortening a cold.

Who should skip this⚠ TWO REAL INTERACTIONS. Zinc can REDUCE ABSORPTION of ciprofloxacin, doxycycline and risedronate — separate the doses by several hours. And sustained high-dose zinc causes COPPER DEFICIENCY, which can itself cause neurological problems, so long-term high doses are a conversation, not a habit.

Vitamin C

A real cofactor for collagen. Never was a cold cure.

You're pairing it with collagen, or your intake is genuinely low.

You're megadosing to prevent colds.

Above about 1,000 mg/day you're mostly making expensive urine — and risking diarrhoea or stones.

The honest readTHE PAIRING IS THE POINT: collagen taken WITH vitamin C improved rate of force development in trained movements — vitamin C is required for your body to build collagen, which is why we pair them rather than selling collagen alone. It also improved work motivation and attentional focus in people whose baseline vitamin C status was INADEQUATE, which is the honest framing: correcting a shortfall, not boosting a normal level.

Who should skip thisSkip the megadoses. Above roughly 1,000 mg/day you mostly make expensive urine, and large doses can cause diarrhoea and, in susceptible people, kidney stones. It is also not a cold cure — that claim outran the evidence decades ago and never caught up.

Alpha-lipoic acid

Reasonable for diabetic nerve symptoms.

Burning or tingling from diabetic neuropathy.

You have chemo-induced neuropathy — reviews couldn't recommend any supplement for that.

The honest readA meta-analysis found oral ALA improved neuropathic symptoms with a clear dose-response. The honest limitation, stated by the reviewers themselves: the trials were at HIGH RISK OF ATTRITION BIAS, meaning enough participants dropped out to make the results less certain than the numbers suggest. Note also that for CHEMOTHERAPY-induced neuropathy specifically, a review could not recommend any supplement at all.

Who should skip thisSkip if you're hypoglycaemic or on insulin without telling us — ALA can lower blood sugar further.

Myo-inositol

Two good reviews, opposite conclusions. Genuinely unsettled.

Take it if
PCOS, as an addition to real medical management.
Skip it if
You're using it instead of treatment you've been prescribed.
Don’t get this wrong
The review written for the international PCOS guideline called the evidence inconclusive. Another said it works as well as metformin. Both are real. Decide with that in view.

We are not going to pick the flattering one for you.

Who should skip thisNot a substitute for the medical management of PCOS. If you're being treated, this is a conversation to have with that clinician, not a replacement for them.

Real metabolic effects. Not 'nature's Ozempic'.

Take it if
You're working on blood sugar or lipids and we've checked your medications.
Skip it if
⚠ You take other prescriptions — especially blood thinners, immunosuppressants or diabetes drugs.
Don’t get this wrong
It blocks the liver enzymes that clear many medicines, so their levels can climb. This is a genuine interaction risk, not a theoretical one.

The honest readThere is a real clinical literature here on glucose and lipid effects, and reviews of dozens of human studies exist. But the internet comparison to GLP-1 medications is not supportable: the effect size, the outcome data and the safety record are not in the same category, and no trial has tested them head to head for weight.

The 2019 American College of Rheumatology and Arthritis Foundation osteoarthritis guideline — the major society guideline — recommends AGAINST it. Same molecule, opposite verdicts, and anyone who tells you it's settled is choosing the study that suits them.

Who should skip thisSkip if you have a shellfish allergy (most glucosamine is shellfish-derived). And set a stop date: if you feel nothing after 3-6 months, that is your answer, and continuing is just cost.

What we don’t sell, and why

A store that sells everything isn’t telling you anything. These are products people ask us for that we’ve chosen not to carry — each with the reason attached.

Beta-carotene supplements (and multivitamins containing them)

The USPSTF evidence report found beta carotene associated with an INCREASED RISK OF LUNG CANCER. This is not a close call and not a matter of dose preference.

Magnesium oxide

Poorly absorbed compared with citrate. It is the cheap default in drugstore bottles, and it is the reason many people conclude magnesium 'did nothing' for them.

Magnesium marketed for muscle cramps

A Cochrane review found magnesium unlikely to help idiopathic or disease-associated cramps. We will sell magnesium for other reasons, but we will not sell you this claim.

High-dose melatonin (5-10 mg)

Far above the physiological range that was actually studied. More is not better, and the larger doses bring more grogginess.

Iron without a documented deficiency

Iron overload is genuinely harmful and haemochromatosis is common. This is a test-first supplement — we will not sell it as a general energy product.

Exotic creatine forms (HCl, ethyl ester, buffered)

Monohydrate is what the evidence is built on and it is the cheapest form available. The premium buys you nothing.

Vitamin D as a pain treatment

The VITAL trial followed nearly 20,000 people for a median 5.3 years and found no effect on pain prevalence or severity. We stock vitamin D for deficiency and bone reasons, not analgesic ones.

Fish oil as a pain treatment

Same trial, same answer. Omega-3 has real triglyceride and inflammatory-marker effects; pain relief at consumer doses is not among them.

High-dose biotin (hair, skin and nail formulas)

TWO reasons, and the second is the serious one. First, a 2024 review of biotin for hair loss found a large gap between how well the public thinks it works and what the evidence actually shows — in people who are not deficient, which is nearly everyone taking it. Second, and more important: biotin INTERFERES WITH COMMON LABORATORY BLOOD TESTS, including thyroid tests, parathyroid hormone, and CARDIAC TROPONIN — the test used to diagnose a heart attack. Interference can make a troponin read falsely normal in someone who is actually having one. If you take biotin anyway, stop it several days before any bloodwork and tell the lab.

High-dose green tea extract capsules

Concentrated green tea extract has been implicated in cases of acute liver injury including ACUTE LIVER FAILURE requiring urgent transplantation, and death. Drinking green tea is not the concern — the concentrated capsules are. The weight-loss benefit on offer does not come close to justifying that tail risk.

High-dose vitamin E supplements

When the US Preventive Services Task Force reviewed single-nutrient supplements for preventing heart disease and cancer, it set aside two as separate cases rather than 'insufficient evidence' — beta carotene and vitamin E. Beta carotene was associated with increased lung cancer risk. Neither belongs on a shelf that claims to be evidence-led.

Berberine sold as 'nature's Ozempic'

We stock berberine, and we label it Debated — but not under this claim. No trial has ever compared berberine head-to-head against a GLP-1 medication, and the effect sizes and outcome data are not in the same category. We will sell you the supplement; we won't sell you the comparison.

Colloidal silver

No established role as a supplement, and it can cause argyria — permanent blue-grey discolouration of the skin that does not reverse when you stop.

The words behind the labels

Every research term you’ll meet on these pages, in plain language — plus the part that usually goes missing: why it matters to your decision.

Randomized controlled trial
Researchers split people into groups by chance — like a coin flip — then give one group the treatment and the other something else. The coin flip is the point: it means the two groups are otherwise similar, so if one does better, the treatment is the likeliest reason.
Why it matters to youThis is the strongest single kind of evidence for 'does this actually work.' When we say Proven, this is usually what's underneath it.
Placebo, and placebo-controlled
A placebo is a dummy — a sugar pill, or a numbing injection with nothing active in it. A placebo-controlled study compares the real thing against the dummy.
Why it matters to youHere's the part that surprises people: placebos genuinely work. Expectation, ritual and being cared for produce real, measurable relief. So 'better than nothing' is a low bar. 'Better than a convincing placebo' is the bar that matters, and it's the one we look for.
Sham procedure
The placebo version of an operation or injection — everything happens the same way, except the active part.
Why it matters to youProcedures carry an especially strong expectation effect, so sham-controlled studies are the honest test. When a treatment on our site beat a sham, that's worth knowing. When it only beat 'usual care,' we say so.
Systematic review and meta-analysis
Instead of one study, researchers gather every study ever done on a question, judge their quality, and pool the results into one bigger answer.
Why it matters to youGenerally more trustworthy than any single study — but only as good as the studies inside it. A pooled answer built from weak trials is still a weak answer, which is why we sometimes label something Debated even though a meta-analysis exists.
Statistically significant vs actually meaningful
'Statistically significant' only means the result probably isn't random chance. It says nothing about whether the difference is big enough to notice in your life.
Why it matters to youThis is the single most misused idea in health marketing. A supplement can produce a statistically significant improvement that no human being would feel. When we can, we tell you whether the change was big enough to matter — not just whether it cleared the statistics bar.
Minimum clinically important difference
The smallest change that a patient would actually notice and care about. Researchers work it out by asking people.
Why it matters to youIt's the honesty check on the point above. On our protein page we say plainly that the muscle gains in older adults were real but did NOT reach this threshold — because you deserve that, not a headline.
Low certainty / high certainty evidence
Researchers grade their own confidence. Low certainty means: this is our best current estimate, and a future study could easily overturn it.
Why it matters to youWhen you see Debated on our site, low certainty is usually why. It's not a knock on the treatment — it's an accurate description of how much we know.
Observational study vs trial
An observational study watches what people already do. A trial assigns them. Watching shows you what goes together; assigning shows you what causes what.
Why it matters to youPeople who take vitamins are also more likely to exercise and see doctors. Observational studies can't fully separate those, which is why a supplement can look wonderful in observation and do nothing in a trial. That has happened repeatedly.
Responder rate
The share of people who improved by a set amount — often 'at least 50% less pain' — rather than the average change across everybody.
Why it matters to youOften more useful than an average, because averages hide the split. If a third of people improve a lot and the rest not at all, the average looks mediocre and tells you nothing about which group you'd be in. That's exactly why we test before we commit to some treatments.
Effect size
How big the difference was, expressed so different studies can be compared.
Why it matters to youIt's the difference between 'this works' and 'this works a bit.' Both are honest sentences; only one of them is usually printed on a label.
Number needed to treat
How many people have to take a treatment for one of them to benefit.
Why it matters to youA genuinely clarifying number. If it takes 20 people to help 1, the treatment can still be worth taking — but you should know those odds before you buy, not after.
Which FORM was studied
Supplements come in different chemical forms, and researchers usually tested one specific form.
Why it matters to youThis may be the most practical thing on this page. Magnesium oxide is absorbed poorly compared with citrate; creatine monohydrate is what nearly every study used, and it's also the cheapest. Buying the wrong form is the most common way people conclude that something 'didn't work' for them.
